Helping patients and caregivers share their voices

A Look Back at 2021 from RPV’s Wes Michael

December 20, 2021 Laura Mullen

Rare Patient Voice President and Founder Wes Michael looks back on 2021 and the growth we have seen as the year draws to a close.

As 2021 comes to an end, it’s a good time to reflect on what we’ve done throughout the year at Rare Patient Voice. Part of the story is told through numbers.

We grew our patient panels by expanding into Europe, now we have 17,000 patients across the EU Big Five countries (UK, Italy, France, Spain, Germany), and we continued to grow our US panel by over 10,000. With hardly any in-person events due to COVID, we grew by using over 2,000 referral partners, and gaining over 26,000 Facebook followers.

We gained 78 new clients, among the 247 clients we worked with this year. They sent us over 7500 proposals, with fortunately 1600 through our PAM DIY tool to get their bid immediately, 24/7. For our clients we conducted over 1400 projects. We gained clients by gaining over 2,000 LinkedIn followers for RPV and by being honored with several awards: making the INC 5000 list of the fastest growing US companies for the first time and the Baltimore’s Fastest Fifty list, as well as being name an Xpectives Health Innovator of the Year award. And we were nominated for the Quirk’s Panel Company of the Year.

How did we do this? We increased our employees by 30% to 42 full and part-timers. I love reading the rave reviews from clients we get after each study, praising our project managers, our proposal writers, and our outreach team. They rated us 8.8 out of 10.

And my favorite statistic, we paid patients 2 million dollars for those studies this year. And patients rated us 9.3 out of 10.

But numbers don’t tell the whole story. When we hear from patients who say, “I enjoy giving this feedback which could help others,” it makes it all worthwhile. And when clients say, “You all have been fantastic to work with and yielded some great results for a difficult recruit!” that also keeps us going.

We couldn’t do it without some special partners. We partnered with Clinakos to provide a very unique offering – the ability to link patient medical, prescription, radiological and other records with our patients who consent to a study. There’s been a lot of interest in combining this data. Our friends at Q One Tech constantly improve our database platform and also provide us with excellent project managers so project volume doesn’t overwhelm us. Core View Tech and Ezentria keep our systems running and assure security of our data. Storyvine gives patients a platform for recording their stories. Feedback Systems helps us make sure Rare Patient Voice goes to the top of your Google searches. WhatNext and Peer Medical have helped us find more cancer patients.

So, thanks to all for a tremendous 2021. We look forward to seeing more people in person in 2022! Have a safe and relaxing holiday!
